Gilchrist & Rutter was pleased to be a sponsor of the Benjamin S. Crocker Symposium on Real Estate Law and Business 2008, produced jointly by the Real Property Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the Richard S. Ziman Center for Real Estate at UCLA. The keynote speakers included: Jerry Brown (California Attorney General and former Governor) and Henry Cisneros (Chairman of CityView and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; in 2006, Builder Magazine named Cisneros #18 out of the top 50 most influential people in the real estate industry). The Crocker Symposium took place on April 9, 2008, at Covel Commons and the Northwest Campus Auditorium, Sunset Village, UCLA Campus. Nanney, a partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, was on the Planning Committee for the Symposium.

May 1, 2007 – Manufactured housing subdivision expert and real estate partner Richard Close and paralegal Susy Forbath spoke on Subdividing Communities at the Western Manufactured Housing Communities Association (WMA) Spring Seminar in Hawaii. April 28, 2007 – Donald C. Nanney, a partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, spoke on Enviromental Insurance: The Top 10 Changes in Policy Terms That Insureds Should Seek and Insurers May Give, at the Annual Retreat of the Real Property Law Section, The State Bar of California, at the Silverado Resort, Napa, California. As a member of the Executive Committee of the Real Property Law Section, Mr. Nanney also served on the Retreat Committee planning the Annual Retreat and he arranged three other panels and the keynote speaker for the event.

April 27, 2007 – Richard Close spoke on “Mobile Home Park Subdivisions: The Law, The Politics, The Players ” along with WMA's Catherine Borg and Aleshire & Wynder's William W. Wynder. This session is geared towards real estate attorneys and counsel for mobile home park owners, managers, lenders or residents. It was held at the Silverado Resort in Napa , California on Friday, April 27, 2007 between 1:30-3:30 p.m.

March 26-27, 2007 –  Duane M. Montgomery, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter , spoke on “Conduit Financing – CMBS and Non-Recourse Carve-outs in Securitized Loans ” at the American Conference Institute’s conference on Alternative Financing in Commercial Real Estate in Las Vegas, Nevada. The MGM Grand Hotel & Casino Hotel hosted the conference.

February 14, 2007 –  Donald C. Nanney, a partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, spoke on Negotiation of Enviromental Insurance: Key Changes in Policy Terms That Insureds Should Seek and Insureres May Give , at a program sponsored by the Land Use Planning and Enviromental Law Subsection of the Real Property Section, Los Angeles County Bar Association.

October 19-20, 2006Duane M. Montgomery, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, spoke on "Selected Issues in Conduit Financing" at the American Conference Institute's conference on Alternative Financing in Commercial Real Estate in New York, New York. The Warwick Hotel hosted the conference.

October 10-12, 2006Richard H. Close, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, presented the seminar "Breaking New Ground: Mobilehome Park Conversions" at the Western Manufactured Housing Communities Association's Annual Convention & Trade Show in Monterey, California.

Mr. Close, lead counsel in a successful, ground-breaking California case involving manufactured housing estate conversions from rental to condominium resident ownership (El Dorado v. City of Palm Springs), has also successfully prosecuted an appeal establishing an important Proposition 8 principle on reductions in property values and a claim for damages against a public entity for regulatory taking. His presentation included insight and expert analysis on these issues, as well as on all aspects of dealing with tenants and local governments.

May 17, 2006 –  Gilchrist & Rutter was proud to once again sponsor the Los Angeles Business Council 's annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards This prestigious competition is uniquely designed to recognize the contributions of. teams of architects, landscape architects, contractors and developers in creating and implementing outstanding building projects in Los Angeles.

The winner of the Gilchrist & Rutter Preservation Award was feted along with famed architectural photographer Julius Shulman and the LABC's other honorees for their vision in enhancing the City's urban landscape.

This year's Awards luncheon took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Brad Cox, Principal, Trammell Crow Company hosted the event. Keynote speakers included Wallis Annenberg of The Annenberg Foundation, Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss and Richard Ziman, CEO and Chairman of Arden Realty. April 30, 2006 -- Susan Fowler McNally, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, spoke on "What Really Matters: Selected Commercial Lease Provisions" at the 25th Annual Real Property Executive Committee Retreat sponsored by the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of California. The Hyatt Regency in Huntington Beach, California hosted the retreat. April 5, 2006 -- Paul S. Rutter led a panel of pre-eminent real estate and economic development pros in a discussion on "The Changing Composition of Southern California's People and the Real Estate They Demand". This dynamic special event, hosted by The Wharton Club of Southern California and the UCLA-Anderson Club of Southern California, focused on how key demographic trends impacting the Southern California real estate market will evolve over the next decade.

Discussion specifically focused on the impact Baby Boomers will command on suburban, urban and second-home markets; analysis of how Echo Boomers entering the workforce will challenge entitlement conditions, commercial development and government response to density demands; and how population migration implications will drive real estate development and finance in an ethnically diverse region.

March 1, 2006Susan Fowler McNally, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, presented "Hot Topic Issues in Commercial Real Estate" as a forum participant in the Richard S. Ziman Center-sponsored event, "Women in Real Estate". The Ziman Center for Real Estate at UCLA, a worldwide leader in real estate teaching, is a vital research and educational program of UCLA's Anderson School of Management. November 18, 2005Martin N. Burton, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, conducted an in-house MCLE presentation on "Green Building" Construction. Mr. Burton's presentation concluded with a guided tour of the Natural Resources Defense Council headquarters in the nationally acclaimed Robert Redford Building in Santa Monica, recognized as the premier environmentally-progressive building in the U.S.

NRDC, one of the nation's most effective lobbying and litigating groups on environmental issues, was fresh off two major court victories: (1) The defeat in Congress of the Alaskan Wilderness oil drilling bill, and (2) the defeat in the courts of the Administration's California coastal oil drilling plan. The NRDC tour included a Q&A session with NRDC attorneys and staff, as well as an in-depth discussion regarding the Redford Building's innovative design and features.

October 16, 2005Richard H. Close, a partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, presented an estate-planning program entitled Wills, Trusts & Charitable Contributions to the congregation of Westchester United Methodist Church. In addition to counseling clients on estate and tax planning matters, Mr. Close's practice focuses on real estate, financial and business transactions, civic administration, and formation of and advising professional entities.

September 22, 2005 - Susan Fowler McNally, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, presented an in-house seminar on Asset Management Contracts: What Landlords Need to Know, to Maguire Properties, LP. Ms. McNally's practice focuses on commercial real estate and business transactions, particularly in acquisition and disposition, development, and financing and leasing of commercial buildings.

April 8, 2005 -  Susan Fowler McNally, a Partner at Gilchrist & Rutter, addressed the topic of What's Hot and What's Not In Office Leases as a participant on the Market Niche panel at the first California regional Conference for Commercial Real Estate Women/California. Ms. McNally's panel received the highest five-star rating for excellence during the two-day event.
